Mont Saint-Michel

Medieval abbey island in Normandy's tidal bay

A Gothic abbey perched on a granite cone in the bay between Normandy and Brittany — surrounded twice a day by some of Europe's biggest tides, and walked through a single spiralling medieval street to the summit.

When to go

April–June and September–October; the highest grandes marées tides are at the equinoxes.

Getting around

Park at the mainland visitor centre; free shuttle or a 45-minute walk across the causeway to the Mont.
