Szimpla Kert
Budapest’s nightlife is defined by its "ruin bars," and Szimpla Kert is the undisputed titan of the genre—a sprawling, surreal labyrinth of mismatched furniture, flickering fairy lights, and industrial decay.
What to expect
Walking into Szimpla Kert feels like stepping into an eccentric artist’s fever dream. The space is constructed from a cluster of interconnected high-ceilinged rooms and open-air courtyards once destined for demolition. You will find yourself navigating through hallways filled with repurposed bathtubs turned into seating, hanging bicycle parts, and neon-lit bric-a-brac.
The bar is massive, offering an extensive menu of Hungarian craft beers, local wines like Egri Bikavér (Bull’s Blood), and a potent variety of pálinka (fruit brandy). Every room offers a different aesthetic, from the cinema room—where old movies often play—to the upstairs mezzanine that overlooks the hookah lounge and smoking areas. The atmosphere is loud, eclectic, and perpetually crowded with international travelers and local bohemians.
History & significance
Opened in 2002, Szimpla Kert was the catalyst for the revitalization of the Seventh District. It transformed a derelict, pre-war factory building into a cultural hub, effectively saving the neighborhood from total commercial redevelopment. By embracing the "ruin" aesthetic—using water-damaged walls and rusted iron as décor rather than hiding them—the founders created a blueprint for urban reclamation that has since become Budapest’s most iconic aesthetic export.
Practical tips
- Opening Hours: It opens daily at 12:00 PM and stays busy until 3:00 or 4:00 AM.
- The Crowd: Entry is free, but expect a queue on weekend nights. If you want to avoid the club-like crush, arrive in the early afternoon when the space is bright, spacious, and perfect for photography.
- Sunday Market: On Sunday mornings (typically 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM), the bar hosts a fantastic farmers’ market. It is the best time to sample regional cave-aged cheeses, spicy honey, and organic produce sold by local Hungarian farmers.
- Payments: While the bar accepts cards, carry a few hundred Forints in cash for the market vendors.
