Soi Dog Foundation
Tucked away amidst the lush greenery of Northern Phuket, the Soi Dog Foundation serves as a sanctuary for thousands of stray animals and a global beacon for humane animal welfare.
What to expect
The foundation operates as an active shelter and hospital rather than a traditional tourist attraction. Upon arrival, you will check in at the reception, where you can join a scheduled guided tour. These walking tours take you through the various zones of the facility, including the advanced veterinary hospital—where you might glimpse surgeons treating rescue cases—and the “cat house,” a sprawling, feline-centric enclosure filled with enrichment structures.
While the facility is clean and well-maintained, the sheer volume of animals is sensory-heavy; expect the enthusiastic chorus of barking in the dog runs and the sight of hundreds of cats lounging in the shade. If you register in advance for a volunteer session, you will get the opportunity to enter enclosed "socialization" areas. Here, the focus is purely on the animals: sitting on the ground to offer quiet reassurance to shy dogs or spending an hour grooming cats to prepare them for international adoption.
History & significance
Founded in 2003 by John and Gill Dalley, Soi Dog began as a small response to the overwhelming population of stray animals suffering on Phuket’s streets. Over two decades, it transformed into the largest stray animal welfare organization in Asia. Its significance lies in the “stray dog population management” model: the foundation proved that mass sterilization and vaccination (CNVR: Catch, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return) are more effective than culling. Today, the facility handles thousands of sterilizations annually, significantly reducing the homeless animal population across Thailand.
Practical tips
- Hours: Tours typically run Monday through Friday, starting at 10:00 AM, 11:00 AM, and 1:30 PM. Saturday tours are limited to the morning.
- Booking: You do not need a ticket for a self-guided experience, but you must register online for a tour or a volunteer slot. Volunteer sessions fill up weeks in advance during the high season (November–April).
- Dress Code: Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes and modest clothing. You will be walking through outdoor areas, and volunteers must have shoulders and knees covered for hygiene and safety.
- Donations: While entry is free, the foundation relies heavily on donations. The onsite gift shop is one of the most effective ways to contribute directly to their medical funds.
Getting there
The foundation is located in Mai Khao, a quiet, northern neighborhood far from the chaotic nightlife of Patong. If you are staying in the southern beach zones, allow at least 60–90 minutes for the commute. The most reliable method is to hire a private taxi via the Grab or Bolt apps. Input “Soi Dog Foundation” into your maps, as the turnoff from Route 4026 leads through a quiet, rural interior road.
Nearby
- Mai Khao Beach: Located less than 10 minutes away by car, this is one of Phuket’s most peaceful stretches of sand. It is perfect for a quiet sunset walk after your visit.
- Sarasin Bridge: Situated at the very northern tip of the island, this bridge connects Phuket to the mainland. The area features a scenic park where locals congregate in the evenings to enjoy the sea breeze and fresh grilled squid from street vendors.
