Sky Tower — Auckland visitor guide

Plan your visit to Sky Tower in Auckland: what to see, practical tips, how to get there and nearby highlights.

Sky Tower

Standing at 328 metres, the Sky Tower is the unmistakable anchor of Auckland’s skyline, offering panoramic vistas that stretch 80 kilometres across the Hauraki Gulf and the volcanic cones of the North Island.

What to expect

The ascent in the glass-fronted elevator provides a stomach-flipping reveal as the city’s grid dissolves into the Waitematā Harbour. Once at the main observation level, you are greeted by three layers of viewing platforms. Beneath your feet, reinforced glass floor panels allow you to peer directly down at the vertigo-inducing drop to Victoria Street. For thrill-seekers, the "SkyJump" involves a BASE jump-style wire-controlled descent, while the "SkyWalk" lets you traverse a narrow, external ledge without handrails. If you prefer a slower pace, Orbit—the tower’s 360-degree revolving restaurant—completes a full rotation every hour, allowing you to dine while tracking the shadows of Rangitoto Island.

History & significance

Completed in 1997 after two and a half years of construction, the Sky Tower was designed as part of the SKYCITY Auckland casino complex. It is built from 15,000 cubic metres of high-performance concrete and 2,000 tonnes of reinforcing steel, specifically engineered to withstand wind speeds of up to 200 kilometres per hour and magnitude 8.0 earthquakes. Beyond its status as a tourist magnet, the tower serves as a high-frequency communications hub for the Auckland region, housing essential radio and television broadcast infrastructure.

Practical tips

Getting there

The Sky Tower is located at the corner of Victoria and Federal Streets in the Central Business District (CBD). It is a five-minute walk downhill from the Britomart Transport Centre if you are arriving by train or ferry. If driving, the SKYCITY complex features a multi-level subterranean parking facility, with entry via Federal Street or Victoria Street. Note that central Auckland traffic can be gridlocked during peak hours (8:00 AM and 5:00 PM).
