Sanur Beach and Promenade
Sanur Beach is the calm, sunrise-facing sanctuary of Bali, where a six-kilometre paved promenade bridges the gap between traditional Balinese village life and modern beachside relaxation.
What to expect
The Sanur coastline is defined by its sheltered lagoon, protected by a long offshore reef that keeps waves to a gentle lap against the shore. This makes it Bali’s premier destination for swimming and shallow-water wading. The promenade—a flat, concrete path stretching from Mertasari Beach in the south to Matahari Terbit in the north—is the area's social artery. Visitors spend their mornings cycling past outrigger jukung boats painted in bright, weathered hues, while local vendors sell fresh fruit skewers and steamed corn. As the day progresses, the beach clubs offer loungers under parasols, though the atmosphere remains far more sedate than the frenetic energy of Kuta or Canggu.
History & significance
Sanur holds a unique place in Balinese history as the site of the 1906 Puputan (a mass ritual suicide/last stand) against Dutch colonial forces. Decades later, in the 1960s, it became the birthplace of Bali's international tourism industry with the construction of the Bali Beach Hotel. Unlike the rapid commercialization seen elsewhere on the island, Sanur has maintained a grounded, "old Bali" charm. Much of the beachfront remains dotted with small, family-owned warungs and older, low-profile resorts that prioritize greenery and traditional aesthetics over high-rise development.
Practical tips
- Best time of day: Arrive between 5:45 AM and 6:30 AM. Sanur is famous as the sunrise capital of Bali; the promenade becomes a meditative experience as locals gather for morning prayers and the sky turns violet over the Lombok Strait.
- Opening hours: The beach is public and open 24/7. Most beach clubs and cafés start service from 8:00 AM.
- Costs: Beach access is free. Public parking at access points (such as the end of Jalan Danau Tamblingan) usually costs Rp 2,000 for motorbikes and Rp 5,000 for cars.
- Cycling: You can rent bicycles from almost any shop along the main strip of Jalan Danau Tamblingan for about Rp 30,000–50,000 per day.
Getting there
Sanur is located in the southeastern quadrant of Denpasar. It is roughly a 30 to 45-minute drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport, depending on traffic. If staying within the Sanur area, you can access the promenade on foot via the many marked sandy alleys (or gangs) that run off the main road, Jalan Danau Tamblingan.
Nearby
- Artisans & Galleries: Wander down Jalan Danau Tamblingan to find Griya Art Gallery, which showcases high-end Balinese fine art, ranging from wood carvings to modern canvases.
- Café Culture: Stop at Genius Café on the Mertasari section of the beach; it is a popular hub for digital nomads and serves excellent plant-based breakfast bowls right on the sand.
- Le Mayeur Museum: Located at the northern end of the beach, this historic house-museum exhibits the impressionist paintings of Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur, a Belgian artist who lived in Sanur in the early 20th century.
