Onsen Hot Pools
Perched precariously on the cliff edge of the Shotover River canyon, Onsen Hot Pools offers a serene, steam-shrouded sanctuary that feels lightyears away from the adrenaline-fueled chaos of central Queenstown.
What to expect
Upon arrival at the cedar-clad complex, you are ushered into a private, climate-controlled room featuring a retractable roof and wall. The highlight is the custom-built cedar hot tub, fed by mineral-rich water heated to between 38°C and 40°C. Push a button, and the wall retracts, merging your indoor sanctuary with the rugged Central Otago landscape. You will watch the turquoise-emerald waters of the Shotover River churn through the canyon below, framed by the jagged, tussock-covered peaks of the Remarkables range. Each session lasts 60 minutes, providing ample time to toggle the jets, sip on the provided complimentary drink and snack, and fully decompress as the mist clings to the canyon walls.
History & significance
Launched in 2007 by a local family, Onsen Hot Pools was designed to provide a sophisticated antidote to the "adventure capital" branding of Queenstown. The facility draws its inspiration from traditional Japanese onsen (hot spring) culture but adapts it to the dramatic, alpine geography of New Zealand’s South Island. It has since become a quintessential local icon, prioritizing high-end privacy and architectural integration with the landscape over the mass-market appeal of public geothermal pools.
Practical tips
- Booking: Demand is extreme. Sunset slots—the "golden hour" sessions—typically book out 3–6 months in advance. Use their online portal early if you have specific dates.
- Hours: They are generally open from 9:00 AM until 10:00 PM.
- Logistics: Towels, robes, and slippers are provided, but bring your own swimsuit.
- Best time: If you miss sunset, book the first slot of the day; the morning light hitting the canyon walls is spectacular and significantly quieter. Night sessions offer the added benefit of world-class stargazing, free from city light pollution.
Getting there
Onsen Hot Pools is located at 165 Arthurs Point Road, in the quiet suburb of Arthurs Point. It is approximately a 10-minute drive from downtown Queenstown. If you do not have a rental car, the facility operates a complimentary shuttle bus that picks up and drops off passengers at the Station Information Centre on the corner of Camp and Shotover Streets in the town center. Pre-booking the shuttle during your pool reservation is essential.
