Mirabell Palace and Gardens

The Mirabell Palace and Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offers a delightful glimpse into baroque splendor and musical heritage in the heart of Salzburg.

What to expect

Mirabell Palace, formerly known as Altenau Castle, is a magnificent baroque building that now houses the municipal administrative offices. While much of the palace's interior is not open to the public, the highlight for visitors is the Angel Staircase (Engelstiege) with its marble balustrade decorated with putti, and the Marble Hall, a breathtakingly ornate room once used for banquets and concerts. The adjacent Mirabell Gardens are the true stars for many, meticulously maintained and featuring a charming geometric design. Expect to find the Hedge Theater, the Pegasus Fountain, the Grand Cascade, and numerous statues and flowerbeds that create a picturesque setting.

History & significance

Commissioned by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau in 1606 for his mistress Salome Alt, the palace was originally christened Altenau. After Wolf Dietrich's deposition, it was renovated and renamed Mirabell by his successor, Markus Sittikus. The gardens underwent significant baroque redesign in the 17th century and were later partially rebuilt in classicist style in the 19th century. Mirabell Palace's most significant claim to fame in modern times is its role as a filming location for the iconic "Do-Re-Mi" scene in Rodgers and Hammerstein's "The Sound of Music." The palace also holds musical importance as the venue for numerous concerts, particularly in the Marble Hall.

Practical tips

Admission to the gardens is free and they are open from morning until dusk, with slightly shorter hours in winter. The palace interior, where accessible, is also free to visit. Wear comfortable shoes as there is a lot to explore in the gardens. Photography is generally permitted, but check for any restrictions within the palace. Allow at least 1-2 hours to fully enjoy the gardens and a brief visit to the accessible parts of the palace. Guided tours focusing on "The Sound of Music" are available and can enhance the experience of the gardens.

Getting there

Mirabell Palace and Gardens are conveniently located on the left bank of the Salzach River, just a short walk (approximately 5-10 minutes) from Salzburg's Old Town and the main railway station (Salzburg Hauptbahnhof). They are easily accessible on foot or by public transport, with several bus lines stopping nearby. Parking in the immediate vicinity is limited and expensive; it is advisable to use public transportation or walk.

Nearby

Across the Salzach River lies the historic Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, home to Salzburg Cathedral, Mozart's Birthplace, and Hohensalzburg Fortress. The charming Getreidegasse, famous for its wrought-iron signs, is also within easy walking distance.
