Mehtab Bagh
Mehtab Bagh, meaning "Moonlight Garden," is a historic Mughal garden complex located directly across the Yamuna River from the Taj Mahal, offering a breathtaking, unobstructed perspective of the iconic monument.
What to expect
Visitors to Mehtab Bagh will find themselves in a meticulously restored Mughal charbagh, a four-part garden layout divided by walkways and water channels. The garden is characterized by lush greenery, fragrant flowerbeds, and numerous fountains, many of which are still operational. The primary draw is the unparalleled panoramic view of the Taj Mahal from its northern edge, especially enchanting during sunrise and sunset. The atmosphere is generally more tranquil than the bustling Taj Mahal complex, allowing for peaceful contemplation and excellent photographic opportunities. Within the garden, there's a large octagonal tank that perfectly reflects the Taj Mahal on calm days.
History & significance
Mehtab Bagh was commissioned by Emperor Babur as the last of the 11 "moonlight gardens." It was designed to complement the Taj Mahal, and some theories suggest it was intended as the Emperor's own mausoleum, perfectly aligned with the tomb of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The garden was also envisioned as a pleasure garden and a place to enjoy the moonlit views of the Taj. It fell into disrepair over centuries, becoming overgrown and neglected. Extensive restoration efforts began in the late 20th century, aiming to recreate its original grandeur and provide an alternative vantage point for appreciating the Taj Mahal.
Practical tips
- Best time to visit: Early morning for sunrise or late afternoon for sunset offers the most spectacular light on the Taj Mahal. Midday can be very hot.
- Photography: The northern embankment provides the most famous shots. Golden hour light is ideal.
- Comfort: Wear comfortable walking shoes, as there is a fair amount of walking within the garden. Carry water, especially during warmer months, and sun protection.
- Entry Fee: There is an entrance fee for Mehtab Bagh, which is significantly lower than that for the Taj Mahal.
- Crowds: While less crowded than the Taj Mahal, it can still get busy, especially at popular viewing times.
Getting there
Mehtab Bagh is located on the eastern bank of the Yamuna River, approximately 1 kilometer north of the Taj Mahal, across the river.
- Auto-rickshaw/Tuk-tuk: This is the most common and convenient way to reach Mehtab Bagh from anywhere in Agra. Negotiate the fare before starting.
- Taxi: Private taxis are also available and can be hired for point-to-point travel or for a half-day tour including Mehtab Bagh and other attractions.
- Cycle Rickshaw: For a more local and slower experience, a cycle rickshaw can be hired for shorter distances.
Nearby
While Mehtab Bagh is primarily a destination in itself, the area around it offers limited immediate attractions. The main draw is its proximity and view of the Taj Mahal. Agra Fort and Itimad-ud-Daulah's Tomb (often called the "Baby Taj") are significant historical sites located a short drive away. Various local eateries and handicraft shops can be found in the vicinity, though more extensive options are available in the main city areas.
