M+ Museum
Set against the towering backdrop of Victoria Harbour, M+ is a sprawling monolith of contemporary visual culture that redefines the skyline of the West Kowloon Cultural District.
What to expect — what visitors actually see/do
M+ is a masterclass in scale, spanning 65,000 square meters of exhibition space dedicated to 20th- and 21st-century visual culture, including design, architecture, moving image, and Hong Kong visual culture. Upon entering via the massive concourse lobby, you are greeted by the "Found Space," a cavernous, industrial-chic atrium carved directly out of the mountain of earth beneath the building.
Visitors spend most of their time wandering the interconnected galleries across multiple floors. Don’t miss the "East Gallery" for massive rotating installations or the "Hong Kong: Here and Beyond" exhibition, which chronicles the city’s post-war transformation through art. The highlight for many is the Roof Garden, located on the podium level. It offers an unobstructed, sensory-rich perspective of the harbour; listen to the distant hum of the Star Ferries below while viewing the museum’s gargantuan LED façade, which turns the entire structure into a glowing art canvas after dark.
History & significance — brief background
Opened in November 2021, M+ was designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron. The building’s most distinct feature is its vertical T-shaped structure, cladded in dark, glazed terracotta tiles that shimmer under the damp Hong Kong sun. It functions not just as a museum, but as a deliberate centerpiece for Hong Kong’s shift toward becoming a premier global arts hub. It stands in stark contrast to the city’s high-density concrete blocks, representing a new era of institutional investment in the creative industries.
