Lotte World Tower
Piercing the Seoul skyline at 555 meters, Lotte World Tower is a gleaming spire of glass and steel that redefines the city’s vertical horizon. It is not merely a high-rise, but a self-contained vertical city where ultra-luxury shopping, marine life, and panoramic vertigo collide.
What to expect
The primary draw is the Seoul Sky observatory, located on levels 117 through 123. The journey begins with a "Sky Shuttle," a high-speed elevator that mimics a cinematic ride, ascending at a rate of 600 meters per minute while displaying a 360-degree digital map of Seoul’s history on the cabin walls. Upon reaching the top, you are greeted by sprawling, floor-to-ceiling vistas of the Han River carving through the dense urban grid. The centerpiece is the "Sky Deck" on the 118th floor—a glass-floored platform that allows you to look straight down at the miniature-looking streets 478 meters below—and the open-air "Sky Terrace," where the wind whips around the top of the tower.
Below the clouds, the basement levels house the Lotte World Aquarium, a cavernous space featuring an 85-meter underwater tunnel and diverse marine ecosystems. The base of the tower is anchored by the Avenuel department store, a gold-standard luxury hub that transitions into sprawling underground food halls.
History & significance
Completed in 2017, Lotte World Tower is the sixth-tallest building in the world and a testament to modern South Korean engineering. Designed to resemble a traditional porcelain brush, its sleek, tapering silhouette is meant to symbolize harmony between nature and modern materials. It serves as the crown jewel of the Lotte Group’s enormous retail empire and remains a controversial yet unavoidable icon of Seoul’s rapid modernization.
Practical tips
- Tickets: Book via the official Seoul Sky website at least 24 hours in advance. "Fast Pass" tickets are available for those with limited time, allowing for bypass of the general queue, which can exceed an hour on weekends.
- Best Time to Visit: Arrive 60 minutes before sunset. This lets you observe the city in natural daylight, watch the golden hour transition, and finally witness the spectacular "Seoul at night" light display.
- Operating Hours: Typically 10:30 AM to 10:00 PM (until 11:00 PM on Fridays and Saturdays).
- Security: Like airport security, there is a bag check before entering the elevators; avoid carrying large tripods or oversized luggage.
Getting there
The tower is located in the Jamsil neighborhood of the Songpa District.
- Subway: Take Line 2 (Green) or Line 8 (Pink) to Jamsil Station. Exit 1 or 2 leads directly into the Lotte World Mall basement; follow the clear signage for "Seoul Sky."
Nearby
- Seokchon Lake Park: Located immediately next to the tower, this park offers the best ground-level photo angles of the spire, especially during the spring cherry blossom season.
- Bangin-dong Gastronomy Street: A short walk southeast of the lake, this street is packed with local Korean BBQ joints and traditional tofu houses that provide a more authentic, neighborhood vibe compared to the mall’s food court.
