Lokrum Island
Just a short ferry ride from Dubrovnik's Old Town, Lokrum Island offers a verdant escape, a protected nature reserve brimming with ancient history, exotic flora, and tranquil shores.
What to expect
Lokrum is a car-free island blanketed in dense Mediterranean vegetation, including Aleppo pines, cypress, and Holm oaks. Visitors will discover several distinct areas: the Benedictine monastery complex with its cloister and museum, the botanical garden showcasing a diverse collection of plants, and numerous rocky coves with crystal-clear Adriatic waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling. King's Landing, the filming location for Qyburn's garden in Game of Thrones, is a popular spot. Don't miss the "Dead Sea," a small saltwater lake connected to the open sea by a submerged cave, offering a unique, buoyant swimming experience. Peacocks roam freely, adding a touch of exotic charm.
History & significance
Lokrum's rich history dates back to the 11th century when Benedictine monks established a monastery here. The island served as a vital refuge and monastic settlement for centuries. Legend holds that Richard the Lionheart, shipwrecked on his return from the Crusades, vowed to build a church on Lokrum, though this was later moved to Dubrovnik. In the 19th century, Archduke Maximilian Ferdinand of Habsburg acquired the island, transforming it into his personal summer residence and establishing the botanical garden. Today, Lokrum is a protected nature reserve and a protected landscape, safeguarding its natural beauty and historical heritage.
Practical tips
Wear comfortable walking shoes as the terrain is uneven in places. Sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water are essential, especially during the summer months. Bring your own food and drinks as facilities on the island are limited to one restaurant and a small café. Swimming shoes are recommended for accessing the rocky coves. The island is a designated nudist beach area in some sections, so be aware.
Getting there
Lokrum Island is accessible via regular ferry services from Dubrovnik's Old Port, located just outside the city walls. Ferries operate frequently during the tourist season (typically April to October). The journey takes approximately 15-20 minutes. Tickets can be purchased at the departure point.
