KL Forest Eco Park
Nestled in the concrete heart of Kuala Lumpur, the KL Forest Eco Park offers a rare, verdant sanctuary where 200-year-old tropical hardwoods stand in silent defiance of the city’s soaring skyscrapers.
What to expect
The park’s primary attraction is the 200-meter-long Canopy Walk. Suspended roughly 20 meters above the forest floor, the walk provides a rare, eye-level vantage point of the secondary tropical rainforest canopy. As you traverse the steel-mesh bridges, you will experience a dramatic sensory contrast: the humid, earthy scent of rotting mulch and damp ferns below, juxtaposed against the panoramic views of the modern skyline. The highlight is the clear, unobstructed view of the KL Tower piercing through the trees, providing the ultimate "nature meets urbanity" photo opportunity. Below the canopy, a network of concrete trails—the Bamboo Walk and the Jelutong Walk—lets you explore the forest floor, where you might spot long-tailed macaques, silvered leaf monkeys, and an array of butterflies.
History & significance
Formerly known as the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve, this site is one of the oldest permanent forest reserves in Malaysia, gazetted in 1906. It represents a vital "green lung" for the city, preserved despite decades of intense urban development surrounding its 11-hectare perimeter. It serves as an essential ecological classroom and a cooling buffer for the dense Bukit Nanas neighbourhood, maintaining a microclimate significantly cooler than the surrounding asphalt-heavy city streets.
Practical tips
- Hours: Generally open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Check the official Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia website for sudden closures during heavy monsoon storms.
- Tickets: Entry is ticketed for foreigners (approximately RM40 for adults), while Malaysian citizens pay a nominal fee. Bring cash or a local e-wallet if card terminals are intermittent.
- Best time to visit: Aim for the 8:00 AM opening. The humidity spikes by midday, and the canopy walk becomes unpleasantly hot and crowded with tour groups by 11:00 AM.
- Attire: Wear light, breathable clothing and comfortable walking shoes. Mosquito repellent is non-negotiable; the forest floor is prime territory for insects.
Getting there
The park is located at the base of the KL Tower on Jalan Puncak, Bukit Nanas. The most efficient way to arrive is via the KL Monorail to the Bukit Nanas station. From there, it is a roughly 10-minute walk uphill toward the KL Tower entrance. If arriving by Grab or taxi, request to be dropped at the "KL Forest Eco Park South Entrance" to save yourself the steep climb.
Nearby
- KL Tower (Menara Kuala Lumpur): The park shares an entrance perimeter with the tower. After your forest walk, head up to the Sky Deck for a 360-degree view of the city.
- Hard Rock Cafe Kuala Lumpur: Located at the base of the tower complex on Jalan Sultan Ismail, it’s a quick stop if you need a familiar sit-down meal or a cold drink after the humidity of the forest.
- The Row (Jalan Doraisaisamy): A 10-minute walk away, this stretch of restored pre-war shophouses is home to high-end coffee shops and bistros, offering a sharp aesthetic contrast to the rugged forest reserve.
