Jabal al-Nour
Jabal al-Nour, or the "Mountain of Light," stands as one of the most profound pilgrimage sites in the Islamic world, offering a grueling vertical trek that culminates at the site of the Prophet Muhammad’s first revelation.
What to expect
The ascent is a strenuous physical trial, not a leisurely walk. The trail consists of approximately 1,200 uneven, man-made stone steps that weave sharply up the jagged, basalt-colored mountainside. As you climb, the view of Mecca begins to expand, eventually offering a panoramic perspective of the sprawling city and the distant minarets of the Masjid al-Haram.
Once you reach the summit area, you will find the entrance to Ghar Hira (the Cave of Hira). The cave itself is a small, hollow indentation in the rock face, barely large enough for a few people to stand in at once. Because of its immense popularity, expect a queue at the cave entrance; visitors typically take a moment for silent reflection or prayer before descending. The summit is often crowded, windswept, and devoid of shade, so prepare for a rocky, exposed environment.
History & significance
Jabal al-Nour holds unparalleled weight in Islamic history. According to tradition, it was inside this small mountain cave that the Prophet Muhammad frequently retreated for contemplation. In 610 CE, during the month of Ramadan, the Angel Jibril (Gabriel) appeared to him here, delivering the first verses of the Quran, starting with the word "Iqra" (Read). The mountain’s name, "Mountain of Light," serves as a perennial reminder of those first moments of divine revelation that altered the course of human history.
Practical tips
- Timing: The best time to climb is well before dawn (to see the sunrise and avoid the brutal midday heat) or late in the afternoon. Avoid the middle of the day entirely.
- Physicality: This is a steep, repetitive incline. If you have knee or respiratory issues, proceed with extreme caution.
- Essentials: Carry at least two liters of water per person. There are no facilities or water stations once you begin the ascent.
- Dress: Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip. Modest athletic clothing is recommended; ensure your gear is breathable yet respectful of the local cultural norms.
- Admission: There is no entry fee for the mountain, as it is a public site.
