Gardens by the Bay
Gardens by the Bay is a futuristic horticultural sprawl where bio-engineered Supertrees meet climate-controlled glass biomes, transforming Singapore’s reclaimed waterfront into a verdant, high-tech sanctuary.
What to expect — what visitors actually see/do
The park is anchored by three distinct zones. The Cloud Forest is a humid, misty conservatory dominated by a 35-meter "mountain" covered in lush vegetation and crowned by a torrential indoor waterfall; you ascend via elevator and descend through elevated walkways that feel suspended in the canopy. The Flower Dome offers a stark, dry contrast, housing a rotating floral display from around the world in a temperate Mediterranean climate.
The Supertree Grove features 18 vertical gardens ranging from 25 to 50 meters tall. During the day, they provide shade; at night, they become the focal point of the Garden Rhapsody light and sound show. For the best vantage, cross the OCBC Skyway, a 128-meter-long aerial walkway connecting two of the taller trees.
History & significance — brief background
Opened in 2012, Gardens by the Bay was the centerpiece of the Singapore government’s "City in a Garden" vision, designed to raise quality of life by enhancing greenery and flora. It sits on 101 hectares of reclaimed land in the Marina Bay district. Beyond aesthetics, the site is a feat of sustainable engineering: the Supertrees act as air venting ducts for the conservatories' energy systems, and the biomass waste from the grounds is used to power the cooling process.
