Garden of Dreams

Nestled amidst the chaotic charm of Kathmandu's Thamel district, the Garden of Dreams offers a tranquil escape, a beautifully restored oasis of European-inspired landscaping and Nepalese architectural elegance.

What to expect

Upon entering the Garden of Dreams, you'll find yourself stepping into a meticulously manicured paradise. Stroll along paved pathways bordered by vibrant flower beds, manicured lawns, and graceful fountains. The garden is divided into six distinct sections, each with its own unique character, including the Edwardian Garden, the Japanese Garden, and the Seasonal Garden. Enjoy the serenity from charming gazebos, listen to the gentle trickle of water features, and observe local life unfold – it's a popular spot for Nepalese families and couples. Several cafes and a restaurant are located within the grounds, offering a pleasant spot to relax and enjoy refreshments amidst the greenery.

History & significance

Originally built in the 1920s as the private garden of Field Marshal Keiser Shumsher Rana, the Garden of Dreams was once a symbol of Nepalese aristocracy and a venue for lavish garden parties. After the Rana dynasty fell, the garden fell into disrepair and was largely neglected for decades. It underwent a significant restoration between 2000 and 2007, a collaborative effort between the Nepalese government and the Danish Embassy, aiming to preserve its historical and architectural significance as well as provide a public green space. The resurrection of the garden is a testament to the commitment to heritage preservation in Kathmandu.
