Art in Paradise Pattaya
Art in Paradise Pattaya serves as an expansive, two-story interactive playground where the boundaries between observer and artwork dissolve through the clever application of forced perspective.
What to expect
Spread over 5,800 square meters, the facility is categorized into ten themed zones, including "Aqua," "Safari," "Classic Art," and "Exotic." Unlike traditional museums, touching the exhibits is mandatory. You will walk across floors and lean against walls painted with intricate murals that, when viewed from a specific "photo point" marked on the floor, create the illusion of 3D depth.
You might find yourself "balancing" on a rotting bridge over a canyon, being poured out of a giant glass of water, or stepping into a faux-classical oil painting. The museum also integrates modern technology via the "Art in Paradise" mobile app; by pointing your camera at designated AR-marked murals, additional animated elements—such as moving creatures or erupting volcanoes—appear on your smartphone display.
History & significance
Opened in 2012 by South Korean owner Shin Jae-youl, the museum was the first of its kind in Thailand. It bridged the gap between traditional fine art and the social media-driven era of travel. The exhibits were meticulously painted by a team of eighteen professional artists from South Korea, who spent months hand-painting the murals to ensure the shadows and light sources were perfectly aligned with the room’s perspective. It remains a benchmark for "trick-eye" galleries globally.
Practical tips
- Operating Hours: Daily from 9:30 AM to 7:00 PM (last entry at 6:00 PM).
- Best Time to Visit: Arrive at opening or on a weekday morning to avoid the tour bus crowds. Weekends are significantly more congested, which can make it difficult to capture photos without other visitors in your frame.
- Tickets: Purchase online via third-party travel platforms to save on the standard foreigner walk-in price.
- The Rules: You must remove your footwear before entering the galleries. Wear socks if you prefer not to walk barefoot.
- Tech Readiness: Charge your phone to 100% and clear your camera’s storage before arrival; you will likely take hundreds of photos.
Getting there
The museum is located on Pattaya Second Road (Sai Song), near the intersection with North Pattaya Road in the Naklua area. If you are staying in Central Pattaya, a "baht bus" (songthaew) will get you close, but private bolt/Grab taxis are more convenient for door-to-door service given the heat. Look for the distinct, oversized white warehouse building flanked by stylized palm trees.
Nearby
- Terminal 21 Pattaya: Located about a 10-minute walk north, this aviation-themed shopping mall offers extensive air-conditioned dining options and a large food court (Pier 21) that provides a budget-friendly lunch.
- Tiffany’s Show Pattaya: Just a few blocks north, this is the home of one of the world’s most famous cabaret shows. It is a landmark of Pattaya’s nightlife culture and often features evening performances if you want to pair your gallery visit with a show.
