Plan your visit to APOPO Visitor Center in Siem Reap: what to see, practical tips, how to get there and nearby highlights.

APOPO Visitor Center

The APOPO Visitor Center in Siem Reap offers a unique and impactful glimpse into the crucial work of humanitarian demining through the eyes of highly trained rats.

What to expect

The center provides an engaging and informative experience, showcasing APOPO's innovative use of African giant pouched rats, known as "HeroRATs," to detect landmines and tuberculosis. Visitors can expect to see demonstrations of the rats in action (though not always live during demonstrations), learn about their training process, and understand the devastating legacy of landmines in Cambodia and APOPO's role in clearing affected areas. The exhibits are designed to be accessible and educational, offering a powerful insight into a critical humanitarian mission. There are opportunities to interact with staff and support the organization through donations or merchandise.

History & significance

APOPO, an acronym for Anti-Personnel Mine Action, was founded in Belgium in 1997 and has been operating in Cambodia since 2012. Cambodia is one of the most heavily landmine-affected countries in the world, a grim consequence of prolonged conflict. APOPO's approach, utilizing the rats' superior sense of smell and their light weight which prevents them from triggering the mines, offers a fast, cost-effective, and humane alternative to traditional demining methods. The HeroRATs are trained to detect the scent of explosives in landmines and their effectiveness in sniffing out tuberculosis at clinics has also made a significant impact on public health. The visitor center serves as a vital outreach hub to raise awareness about the ongoing challenges of landmines and TB, and to garner support for APOPO's life-saving work.

Practical tips

Getting there

The APOPO Visitor Center is located on the outskirts of Siem Reap town, making it a relatively easy trip from the city center. It is situated a short distance from the main tourist areas. Tuktuks are the most common and convenient mode of transport. A typical journey from Pub Street or the Old Market area will take around 15-20 minutes. Negotiate a round-trip fare with your driver, which should include waiting time. Alternatively, you can arrange for a private car or taxi.

Nearby

The APOPO Visitor Center is not situated in a dense tourist hub, making it a more focused visit. However, if you are looking to combine your trip, consider visiting the Landmine Museum (also focused on the impact of landmines and demining efforts) which is a short drive away. Many visitors choose to visit APOPO in conjunction with explorations of the Angkor Wat temples, though these are a significant distance further north.
