Al-Khazneh (The Treasury) — Petra visitor guide

Plan your visit to Al-Khazneh (The Treasury) in Petra: what to see, practical tips, how to get there and nearby highlights.

Al-Khazneh (The Treasury)

Carved directly into a vibrant sandstone cliff face, Al-Khazneh, famously known as The Treasury, is Petra's most iconic and breathtaking monument. Its intricate Hellenistic facade, illuminated by the desert sun, is a must-see for any visitor to Jordan.

What to expect

Prepare to be awestruck as you emerge from the narrow Siq canyon to behold Al-Khazneh. The sheer scale and exquisite detail of the facade, nearly 40 meters high, are remarkable. You'll see columns, friezes, and sculptures, remarkably preserved despite centuries of exposure. While you can admire it up close from the plaza in front, entering the structure itself is not permitted for preservation reasons. The plaza is often bustling with visitors, and local Bedouin guides may offer camel or horse rides.

History & significance

Al-Khazneh's name, "The Treasury," comes from a local legend that pirates hid their loot in the urn at the top of the facade. However, archaeologists believe it was actually constructed as a tomb for a Nabataean king, likely Aretas IV, in the early 1st century AD. Its architectural style, a blend of Nabataean ingenuity and Hellenistic influences, reflects the prosperity and cosmopolitan nature of the Nabataean kingdom, which controlled vital trade routes. Despite its elaborate appearance, its primary purpose was funerary.

Practical tips

Getting there

Al-Khazneh is located deep within the ancient city of Petra. The only way to reach it is by walking through the Siq, a dramatic narrow canyon that stretches for over a kilometer. The entrance to Petra is near the town of Wadi Musa. From the visitor center, you will walk or take a horse-drawn carriage (for an additional fee) to the beginning of the Siq. The walk through the Siq itself is an integral part of the experience, building anticipation for the reveal of Al-Khazneh.

Nearby

After marveling at Al-Khazneh, your journey through Petra continues. A short walk beyond provides access to the Street of Facades, an impressive row of monumental tombs carved into the rock. You can also explore the Roman Theater and further into Petra, the Royal Tombs, and eventually, the challenging but rewarding hike to the Monastery (Ad-Deir).
